Specialized Recon 2.0 MTB Shoe blends carbon-reinforced power with hike-ready grip and fit
What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:
"I’ve used these for everything from trail rides to bikepacking trips. They’re efficient on the bike, but still comfy to hike in when needed. Great blend of stiffness, traction, and all-day comfort."
Ready for trail days that demand more than just smooth pedaling, the Specialized Recon 2.0 Mountain Bike Shoe brings race-grade energy transfer and backcountry-ready grip together in a sleek, all-terrain platform. Its carbon-injected nylon sole delivers powerful efficiency without going full race-stiff, while the STRIDE toe-flex feature keeps the shoe forgiving when you're off the bike and scrambling for traction.
Dialed in with a BOA® L6 system and forefoot strap, the Recon 2.0 wraps the foot securely with micro-adjustable precision. The SlipNot™ rubber tread adds grip where other XC shoes slide, letting you tackle steep, sketchy hike-a-bike sections with confidence. A welded upper construction keeps the shoe light, flexible, and trail-durable, making it equally suited for hard-charging rides and long-haul adventures.
For riders who split their time between pedaling hard and navigating unpredictable terrain, this shoe is a workhorse that doesn’t compromise performance or comfort.

I’m switching from Shimano pure mountain bike shoes for gravel riding. I carefully researched the sizing and ordered based on the lengths provided by Specialized as well as other reviews. Yes, these like many other cycling shoe brands, like Shimano, are quite narrow. I’m a Nike size 10, and measured out that the size 43 would be just about right, and was very happy to find that was spot on for me. These shoes are definitely more road shoe than off road in that they are not super rugged, though the material choice, rubberized toe cap, and soft rubber lugs are definitely pulled from the mountain parts bin and are welcomed. The rubber lugs protect my SPD pedals well and make walking in them actually possible if not comfortable for short distance on hard ground. The rubber is super soft. The single boa system is totally fine for my light use riding. The only reason I give them 4 stars is as stated in other reviews they are quite flexible in the last, being plastic, and not suitable for racing or standing on the pedals in rough terrain. For light gravel and casual road rides they are absolutely fine for my use case as I’ll never be putting out serious watts in these.

Recon 2.0 Mountain Bike Shoes

I bought these shoes a month ago after owning and loving my specialized mtb shoes previously. The shoes are light and easy to get on and off, but I’m disappointed that there is only one twist tightened instead of two. I can’t get the shoes as tight as the need to be. My old shoes had the two of the old fashioned strip and latch tighteners, and I could always get the shoe as tight as i wanted. These new Recons seem like they are not going to be a durable either but they are lighter.

Too soft.

The shoes are looking great, comfortable, easy to walk in, have a good grip to surface, but they are too flexible and soft fir an effective power transfer. Will use them fir a recovery and social rides.

Comfort & Style

Shoes are comfortable & light. Replacing a pair of Shimano's and it's been a while since I wore specialized shoes - I had always liked their comfort but had a few disappointments with durability. So far happy with the comfort of these, and based on the last few pairs of other brands, it seems durability may not be so different. I've struggled to find my right size over the years - it seems shoe sizes have gotten smaller, and I appreciate these had half size increments. These had a little less room in the toe box than I'd hoped for but size seems about right - compared to my previous shoes, the toe box seems to be stiffer so I probably can't rely on stretching. I use Time ATAC pedals, and the cleats are pretty protected by the sole lugs which is nice when walking around

Decent shoes!

I measured my foot 100 times and used the Specialized fit guide and the sizing was right. I'm an 11 in Nike and ended up with a 44.5. Super comfy shoes. Easy to walk in the forefoot bends nicely. The Boa adjusts back and forth which is nice. Only slight negative is that it isn't a carbon sole so if you do stomp on the pedals you can feel the shoes flex. But, that is as described. I was wearing all carbon shoes prior so it was a little surprising. May go to the Recon 3.0 eventually but for now these are nice and comfy.
